We've done the research so you don't have to. A good mechanical keyboard makes everyday typing, coding and gaming more comfortable, and it should last for years, but the jargon (layouts, switches, keycaps, hot-swap, 75% versus tenkeyless) makes choosing one harder than it should be. Our meta-review takes into account the best insight online, from expert reviews to buyer ratings, and narrows it down to five keyboards that are easy to buy in the US, all in stock on Amazon.com when we checked.

Our picks at a glance

  • Best overall: Keychron V3 Max, about $115. Tenkeyless, wireless, hot-swappable, PBT keycaps and a volume knob.
  • Best compact: Keychron V1 Max, about $100. The same features in a smaller 75% layout.
  • Best with a number pad: Keychron V6 Max, about $120. Full-size, wireless, hot-swappable.
  • Best for gaming: Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid, about $160. Magnetic analog switches with Rapid Trigger.
  • Best budget: Keychron C3 Pro, about $45. Wired, fully programmable and a big step up from a basic office keyboard.

How we chose

We don't test products ourselves; we pull together what the experts and owners say. For this guide we weighed up long-term expert reviews, then checked every pick's specs, current US price, availability and buyer ratings on Amazon.com.

We looked for:

  • A standard US (ANSI) layout sold on a US listing, so every key is where you expect it
  • Durable keycaps, ideally PBT plastic, which wears and shines less than ABS
  • A removable USB-C cable, so a broken cable doesn't mean a new keyboard
  • Easy programming in a browser or app, so you can remap keys without installing fiddly software
  • Hot-swap sockets, so you can change the switches later without soldering
  • A fair price for what you get, plus a decent number of buyer ratings

Best overall: Keychron V3 Max

Keychron V3 Max tenkeyless wireless mechanical keyboard

Why it's our top pick: Reviewers rate it as one of the best all-rounders you can buy, praised for an enjoyable typing experience and for packing in RGB lighting, hot-swap switches, wireless, full programmability and a volume knob at a reasonable price. It's a tenkeyless board, so it keeps the arrow keys and function row but drops the number pad, which lets your mouse sit closer to you.

What you get (from the Amazon.com listing):

  • Tenkeyless layout with Gateron Jupiter Banana tactile switches (Brown and Red versions are listed too)
  • Wireless over 2.4 GHz (with a 1,000 Hz polling rate) or Bluetooth 5.1 for up to three devices, plus wired USB-C
  • Hot-swap sockets that take almost any 3- or 5-pin MX-style switch
  • Double-shot PBT keycaps in Keychron's OSA profile, with south-facing RGB lighting
  • Remappable in a browser with Keychron's Launcher web app, a Mac/Windows toggle and extra keycaps for both
  • 4,000 mAh rechargeable battery

Worth knowing: The US Banana-switch listing has a modest 3.8-star rating from 56 ratings, with the Red (4.2) and Brown (4.0) versions a little higher. Reviewers point out that the V Max range only comes in black, and that Keychron's one-year warranty only replaces the faulty parts, not the whole keyboard. Keychron's own store now focuses on the newer V3 Ultra, but the V3 Max was in stock on Amazon.com, sold by the Keychron Store and shipped by Amazon, when we checked.

Best compact: Keychron V1 Max

Keychron V1 Max 75% wireless mechanical keyboard

Why we like it: If desk space is tight, this is the same recipe in a 75% layout, similar to a laptop keyboard. Reviewers rate it among the best compact mechanical keyboards for its typing feel and features, including RGB, hot-swap, wireless, a knob and easy programming.

What you get (from the Amazon.com listing):

  • 75% layout with Gateron Jupiter Brown tactile switches (a Red linear version is the same price)
  • Gasket-mounted design with sound-absorbing foam
  • 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.1 (three devices) and wired USB-C, with a 1,000 Hz polling rate on 2.4 GHz and wired
  • Hot-swappable switches and screw-in PCB stabilizers
  • Double-shot PBT keycaps and south-facing RGB backlighting
  • 4,000 mAh rechargeable battery

Worth knowing: The Banana-switch version wasn't available on Amazon.com when we checked, so we've linked the Brown version. Like most compact boards, it uses a few non-standard key sizes (the right Shift and bottom row), which matters if you buy replacement keycaps later. A few Amazon.com buyers reported keys double-typing after some months, so keep your receipt and check the return window.

Best with a number pad: Keychron V6 Max

Why we like it: If you live in spreadsheets, you'll want a number pad. Reviewers rate the V6 Max alongside the V3 Max: it types just as well and has the same extra features, with the trade-off that the full-size layout takes up much more desk space. It also has the most buyer ratings of our Keychron wireless picks on Amazon.com.

What you get (from the Amazon.com listing):

  • Full-size layout, 108 keys, with Gateron Jupiter Brown tactile switches
  • Gasket design with sound-absorbing foam
  • 2.4 GHz (USB-C and USB-A receivers included), Bluetooth 5.1 (three devices) and wired USB-C, 1,000 Hz polling on 2.4 GHz and wired
  • Hot-swappable switches and PCB-mounted screw-in stabilizers
  • Double-shot PBT keycaps, adjustable south-facing RGB, 4,000 mAh battery (up to 100 hours at the lowest brightness)
  • A physical Mac/Windows toggle with keycaps for both

Worth knowing: Amazon.com buyers praise the build, the feel of the Brown switches and the sound, but their reviews on reliability and value are mixed, with some reporting faulty keys or a dongle that wouldn't pair. It was sold by the Keychron Store and shipped by Amazon when we checked.

Best for gaming: Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid

Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid gaming keyboard

Check the price of the Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid

Why we like it: Instead of ordinary mechanical switches, this uses magnetic analog (Hall effect) switches, so you can set how far each key travels before it registers, and Rapid Trigger lets a key fire again without being fully released. That matters in fast shooters. It's a regular in reviewers' best-of lists for gaming and tenkeyless boards, praised for its build quality and fast Rapid Trigger switches, and it has the highest rating of our picks on Amazon.com.

What you get (from the Amazon.com listing):

  • Tenkeyless layout with magnetic analog switches, adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger, which you can change on the fly with Fn shortcuts
  • Wired, with a detachable USB-C cable
  • Dual-shot PBT keycaps, LIGHTSYNC RGB lighting, media buttons and a volume roller
  • Per-key commands and multi-layer combos through Logitech G HUB
  • One-year limited hardware warranty

Worth knowing: It's wired only, which reviewers see as the main compromise, and it's aimed at Windows PCs. The list price is $189.99; it was about $160, sold and shipped by Amazon.com, when we checked. Black, white and magenta versions are listed.

Best budget: Keychron C3 Pro

Keychron C3 Pro tenkeyless wired mechanical keyboard

Check the price of the Keychron C3 Pro

Why we like it: Reviewers recommend it as one of the best budget mechanical keyboards, with a satisfying typing feel and full programmability at a low price. Cheap mechanical keyboards often feel hollow and gritty, and reviewers say this one avoids the worst of that. It's an easy way to find out whether you like mechanical keys before spending more, and with more than 450 ratings it's the most-rated pick in this guide on Amazon.com.

What you get (from the Amazon.com listing):

  • Tenkeyless, 87 keys, with Red linear switches (a Brown tactile version is also listed)
  • Gasket mount with sound-absorbing foam
  • 1,000 Hz polling rate and N-key rollover
  • Remappable with QMK/VIA, and Fn + Caps Lock switches between Mac and Windows
  • Double-shot ABS shine-through keycaps with a red backlight

Worth knowing: Reviewers point out the trade-offs: no wireless, the keycaps feel cheaper and will wear sooner, and the backlight is red only. The list price is $49.99, and it was about $45, sold by Keychron and shipped by Amazon, when we checked. Keychron also sells a newer C3 Pro 8K with RGB lighting and PBT keycaps for a little more.

How to choose

Size. Full-size keyboards have a number pad. Tenkeyless (TKL) boards drop it but keep everything else. 75% boards squeeze the same keys closer together, like a laptop. Smaller boards let your mouse sit closer, which can ease strain on your shoulders, neck and back.

Switches. Linear switches feel smooth, tactile switches have a small bump, and clicky switches add a click. If you're unsure, a tactile Brown-style switch is a safe, office-friendly start. With a hot-swap keyboard you can change your mind later.

Layout. In the US, the standard is ANSI, with a wide, single-row Enter key and a long left Shift. Every pick here is sold in a US layout on Amazon.com. If you're buying for someone in the UK or Europe, look for a listing that says ISO or names their country's layout.

Wireless or wired. Wireless is tidier, and these Keychron boards switch between three Bluetooth devices. Wired is simpler and never needs charging, which is why the gaming pick sticks with a cable.

Should you wait for Black Friday?

Black Friday is on November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving, and keyboards and other PC accessories often get discounted then, with Cyber Monday following on November 30. If you don't need one right now, note today's prices from the table above and see how to check whether a Black Friday deal is real.

FAQs

Are mechanical keyboards better for typing?

Many people find them more comfortable and consistent than the shallow keys on a laptop, and they're built to last longer. They are usually louder, though linear and tactile switches are quieter than clicky ones.

Can I use these with a Mac?

The Keychron picks have a Mac/Windows toggle or shortcut, and the V Max models include Mac keycaps. The Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid is aimed at Windows PCs.

What does hot-swap mean?

You can pull a switch out and push a new one in without soldering. It's the easiest way to change how a keyboard feels.

Is PBT better than ABS?

PBT keycaps are usually thicker and develop less shine over time. ABS keycaps are cheaper and wear faster, but you can replace them later.
