We've done the research so you don't have to. A good mechanical keyboard makes everyday typing, coding and gaming more comfortable, and it should last for years, but the jargon (layouts, switches, keycaps, hot-swap, ISO versus ANSI) makes choosing one harder than it should be. Our meta-review weighs up the best insight online, from expert reviews to buyer ratings, and narrows it down to five keyboards that are easy to buy in the UK, all available with a UK layout on Amazon UK.
Our picks at a glance
- Best overall: Keychron V3 Max, about £110. Tenkeyless, wireless, hot-swappable, PBT keycaps and a volume knob.
- Best compact: Keychron V1 Max, about £110. The same features in a smaller 75% layout.
- Best with a number pad: Keychron V6 Max, about £92. Full-size, wireless, hot-swappable.
- Best for gaming: Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid, about £138. Magnetic analogue switches with Rapid Trigger.
- Best budget: Keychron C3 Pro, about £37. Wired, fully programmable and a big step up from a basic office keyboard.
How we chose
We don't test products ourselves; we pull together what the experts and owners say. For this guide we weighed up long-term expert reviews, then checked every pick's specs, current UK price, UK-layout availability and buyer ratings on Amazon UK.
We looked for:
- A UK (ISO) layout you can buy from a UK listing, so the Enter key, £ sign and @ key are where you expect them
- Durable keycaps, ideally PBT plastic, which wears and shines less than ABS
- A removable USB-C cable, so a broken cable doesn't mean a new keyboard
- Easy programming in a browser or app, so you can remap keys without installing fiddly software
- Hot-swap sockets, so you can change the switches later without soldering
- A fair price for what you get, plus a decent number of buyer ratings

Most of these UK listings have only a few dozen ratings so far, so we've leaned more on the expert consensus than on star scores.
Best overall: Keychron V3 Max

Why it's our top pick: Reviewers rate it as one of the best all-rounders you can buy, praised for an enjoyable typing experience and for packing in RGB lighting, hot-swap switches, wireless, full programmability and a volume knob at a reasonable price. It's a tenkeyless board, so it keeps the arrow keys and function row but drops the number pad, which lets your mouse sit closer to you.
What you get (from the Amazon UK listing):
- UK layout with Gateron Jupiter Banana early-tactile switches
- Wireless over 2.4 GHz (with a 1,000 Hz polling rate) or Bluetooth 5.1 for up to three devices, plus wired USB-C
- Hot-swap sockets that take almost any 3- or 5-pin MX-style switch
- Double-shot PBT keycaps in Keychron's OSA profile, with south-facing RGB lighting
- Remappable with Keychron's browser-based Launcher, a Mac/Windows switch and extra keycaps for both
- 4,000 mAh rechargeable battery
Worth knowing: Reviewers point out that the V Max range only comes in black, and that Keychron's one-year warranty only replaces the faulty parts, not the whole keyboard. Keychron's own store now sells the newer V3 Ultra instead, but the V3 Max is still on Amazon UK, sold by Keychron's UK store when we checked.
Best compact: Keychron V1 Max

Why we like it: If desk space is tight, this is the same recipe in a 75% layout, similar to a laptop keyboard. Reviewers rate it among the best compact mechanical keyboards for its typing feel and features, including RGB, hot-swap, wireless, a knob and easy programming.
What you get (from the Amazon UK listing):
- UK layout, 84 keys, with Gateron Jupiter early-tactile switches
- Gasket-mounted design with sound-absorbing foam
- 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.1 (three devices) and wired USB-C, with a 1,000 Hz polling rate on 2.4 GHz and wired
- Hot-swappable, pre-lubed switches and screw-in stabilisers
- Double-shot PBT keycaps and RGB backlighting
- 4,000 mAh rechargeable battery
Worth knowing: Like most compact boards, it uses a few non-standard key sizes (the right Shift and bottom row), which matters if you buy replacement keycaps later. The battery isn't replaceable, though you can always use it wired.
Best with a number pad: Keychron V6 Max

Why we like it: If you live in spreadsheets, you'll want a number pad. Reviewers rate the V6 Max alongside the V3 Max: it types just as well and has the same extra features, with the trade-off that the full-size layout takes up much more desk space. It was also the cheapest of our Keychron picks on Amazon UK when we checked.
What you get (from the Amazon UK listing):
- Full-size UK layout, 108 keys, with Brown tactile switches
- Gasket design with sound-absorbing foam
- 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.1 (three devices) and wired USB-C, 1,000 Hz polling on 2.4 GHz and wired
- Hot-swappable switches and PCB-mounted screw-in stabilisers
- Double-shot PBT keycaps, adjustable RGB, 4,000 mAh battery
Worth knowing: One Amazon UK reviewer said theirs arrived set up with Apple-style keys and needed a few of the supplied keycaps swapping to match the UK Windows layout, which they found easy.
Best for gaming: Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid

Why we like it: Instead of ordinary mechanical switches, this uses magnetic analogue (Hall effect) switches, so you can set how far each key travels before it registers, and Rapid Trigger lets a key fire again without being fully released. That matters in fast shooters. It's a regular in reviewers' best-of lists for gaming and tenkeyless boards, praised for its build quality and fast Rapid Trigger switches.
What you get (from the Amazon UK listing):
- UK layout, 87 keys, magnetic analogue switches with adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger
- Wired USB connection
- LIGHTSYNC RGB lighting and multi-layer key commands through Logitech G HUB
- Two-year manufacturer warranty
Worth knowing: It's wired only, which reviewers see as the main compromise, and the switches aren't hot-swappable. When we checked, the Amazon UK listing was sold by a third-party seller rather than Amazon or Logitech, with limited stock, so check the seller before you buy.
Best budget: Keychron C3 Pro

Why we like it: Reviewers recommend it as one of the best budget mechanical keyboards, with a satisfying typing feel and full programmability at a low price. Cheap mechanical keyboards often feel hollow and gritty, and reviewers say this one avoids the worst of that. It's an easy way to find out whether you like mechanical keys before spending more. One Amazon UK buyer summed it up as "very smooth and responsive."
What you get (from the Amazon UK listing):
- ISO UK layout, tenkeyless, 87 keys, with Red linear switches
- Gasket mount with sound-absorbing foam
- 1,000 Hz polling rate and full key rollover
- Remappable with QMK/VIA, and Fn + Caps Lock switches between Mac and Windows
- Double-shot ABS keycaps with a red backlight
Worth knowing: Reviewers point out the trade-offs: no hot-swap and no wireless, the keycaps feel cheaper and will wear sooner, and the backlight is red only. The listing we checked was sold by a third-party seller, ARCCI UK.
How to choose
Size. Full-size keyboards have a number pad. Tenkeyless (TKL) boards drop it but keep everything else. 75% boards squeeze the same keys closer together, like a laptop. Smaller boards let your mouse sit closer, which can ease strain on your shoulders, neck and back.
Switches. Linear switches feel smooth, tactile switches have a small bump, and clicky switches add a click. If you're unsure, a tactile Brown-style switch is a safe, office-friendly start. With a hot-swap keyboard you can change your mind later.
UK layout (ISO) or US layout (ANSI). UK keyboards have a tall Enter key, a short left Shift, and the £ sign and @ key in different places. Many keyboards sold internationally are US layout, so check the listing says UK or ISO before you buy.
Wireless or wired. Wireless is tidier, and these Keychron boards switch between three Bluetooth devices. Wired is simpler and never needs charging, which is why the gaming pick sticks with a cable.
Should you wait for Black Friday?
Black Friday is on 27 November 2026, and keyboards and other PC accessories often get discounted then. If you don't need one right now, note today's prices from the table above and see how to check whether a Black Friday deal is real.
FAQs
Are mechanical keyboards better for typing?
Many people find them more comfortable and consistent than the shallow keys on a laptop, and they're built to last longer. They are usually louder, though linear and tactile switches are quieter than clicky ones.
Can I use these with a Mac?
The Keychron picks have a Mac/Windows switch or shortcut, and the V Max models include Mac keycaps. The Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid is aimed at Windows PCs.
What does hot-swap mean?
You can pull a switch out and push a new one in without soldering. It's the easiest way to change how a keyboard feels.
Is PBT better than ABS?
PBT keycaps are usually thicker and develop less shine over time. ABS keycaps are cheaper and wear faster, but you can replace them later.
