Black Friday is Friday 27 November. Cyber Monday is 30 November. Get ready for a lot of red "was" prices and ticking countdowns. Some are real bargains. Plenty aren't. So we made something to tell them apart: the Dealizard Deal Checker. Paste a product link and find out if it's a real deal or not.

How it works

  1. Copy a product link.
  2. Paste it into the Deal Checker. Dealizard Deal Checker checks price history.
  3. Get your answer. Bad, OK, Good or Great, with a quick reason why.

Starting today with Amazon. More stores coming soon!

If a "discount" only exists because the price went up first, you'll see an Inflated price warning. Lightning fast decisions by the Lizard.

It's free and there's nothing to sign up for. It checks the price, not the product, so still read the reviews. And prices change fast, so take a last look at the store before you pay.

A real example: the "deal" that wasn't

We checked this one on 21 October. A SanDisk Ultra Go 64GB microSD card on Amazon UK had "dropped" to £22.99. Sounds good, right?

Not quite. It usually costs £17.99. Back on 20 July the price shot up to £31.99, then got "cut" to £22.99. So the "deal" is still 28% more than normal.

Dealizard Deal Checker says: Bad. The Lizard is not impressed.

Why do prices go up before Black Friday?

Every sale price is compared with something, like a "was" price. Make that "was" price bigger, and the same sale price suddenly looks like a huge saving.

Watch out for:

  • Prices that creep up a few weeks before a sale, then come back down for the "deal".
  • Old "was" prices that hardly anyone ever paid.
  • Prices that bounce around all the time, so one price on one day tells you very little.

UK consumer group Which? tracked 175 products for a year and found 83% were the same price or cheaper at some point outside the Black Friday sales. More in Are Black Friday deals real?

Don't skip the sales, though. Some Black Friday prices really are the best of the year. The trick is knowing which ones.

What the answers mean

  • Great: about as cheap as it gets. If you need it, now's a good time.
  • Good: a real saving.
  • OK: the usual price. No rush.
  • Bad: no real saving, or the price went up first.

Your Black Friday game plan

  • Check your wishlist now so you know what things normally cost.
  • Check again on the day. Paste the link back in when the "deal" lands.
  • Ignore the countdown. If it says OK or Bad, the same price will probably come round again.
